The human spirit is a miraculous thing. We are inherently created to achieve incredible feats, proven repeatedly as Olympians win gold medals and refugees survive unimaginable war-torn conditions. Yet, it can still be difficult to leave your bed in the morning. As we journey through life, we often meet times when our mental doubts overpower our physical strength. These times showcase just how important mindset is. Our thoughts rule our existence and thoughts of doubt will lead to unnecessary failure. When I hit these rough patches, I have found strength in looking back on when I overcame my negative mindset.
By understanding that you were capable of succeeding in the past, you will be able to push yourself the extra mile now. By feeding yourself cold hard proof of your strength and determination, you can reignite that mindset in the present. I tend to use this a lot in my own life. Recently, I moved into my new college apartment on the second floor of a building with broken elevators. Carrying enough boxes to fill four cars up two flights of stairs was truly a test of my strength. While at first I was flooded with anger, disappointment, and a bit of fear, I was reminded of a time abroad in Milan, Italy. A friend and I visited this stunning city and greatly underestimated the size of it. This led to a grueling 60,000-step journey to find a place to eat dinner during the two hours of the day most restaurants are closed. I survived both challenges, though, and I came out stronger. I probably even tapped into a former moment of strength to achieve the Milan hike. My point in all of this is that, as humans, we continuously survive unimaginable feats and we still doubt ourselves as we face the ones to come. This opens up an opportunity to reach into our higher state of being.
Gloria Santiago, the owner and founder of Metaphysical Pilates, uses an incredible method to combat discouragement when entertaining hard tasks. While doing a Pilates class at the studio, Gloria instructed me to complete a particularly hard set of movements. As she began to sense my struggle, Gloria asked me to look into the mirror and see my higher self. She explained that this higher self had already accomplished this challenge and that by tapping into her, I could absorb her strength and perseverance. I went on to push through three more sets.
These two methods create an unstoppable and powerful force: belief in the present. By conducting the marriage between the strength of what you've been through and the evolution of your future self, you will find a mindset that is guaranteed to carry you through any challenge of the present. Past and future as concepts of time only exist in the mind. The present is the only time that physically exists at any moment. If the past and future are already solely in the mind, why not enable them to nourish and evolve the mindset? Instead of allowing regret of the past and fear of the future to overtake your being, find gratitude in what you've experienced and excitement in what is to come to fully rework your mindset into one that is equipped for the present you desire.
