Trust is something that is earned. Similar to respect, we begin to trust people once they show us they are worthy of it. Trust can be gained in a variety of ways. Whether that is through correct action, the "vouching for" of others, or simply through intuition, we begin to trust others once we sense they are safe, capable of keeping promises, or simply just energetically compatible with us. Trust is something we hold instinctively as in primal times, trusting the wrong person, the wrong wild creature, or the wrong bush of berries could be lethal. When considering trust as something we earn, why do so many of us find it so hard to trust ourselves?
To trust oneself, one must fully believe they are capable of fulfilling their needs and desires. Now, realistically, if you were incapable of doing this would you even be alive today? The trust we hold within our subconscious to keep ourselves alive is purely instinctual. We work to expedite recovery with self-care and healing remedies when we are sick, we ensure our basic needs are met each day, and we avoid potentially dangerous situations when possible, yet, after a lifetime of successful survival, why do we still find it so hard to trust that we hold the best intentions for ourselves?
In writing this I feel it is important to note that I have also found it hard to fully trust myself. I am a human who makes mistakes, who hurts my own feelings, who is clouded with self-doubt and mental turmoil. I (incorrectly) think to myself, as many others have, that I am incapable of change, incapable of growth, and incapable of moving past my toughest obstacles. Yet, somehow, in the end, I always make it through. It was not until recently that I finally cracked the code: trust yourself, not the process.
A phrase we hear time and time again as metaphysical thought and spirituality blossoms throughout internet culture is to simply "trust the process." I believe this opens the mind to a false sense of security from this invisible "process" as the mind scrambles to attach to something that does not exist. When we hear "trust the process," we instantly begin to see our life path as this out-of-reach, preset sequence that we do not take part in. The reality is that you are the creator of your life path, your world, and the future you will one day exist in. Letting go of the process and re-establishing that trust and confidence in your inner being is the key to acquiring all that you desire. Your actions, your thoughts, and your existence are completely determined and controlled by you. By putting your trust in your own abilities, releasing self-doubt, and ceasing the habit of projecting anger and disappointment onto the "process," the world will go beyond your fingertips and into your hands.
Once you find it in yourself to fully trust yourself, the world will find it within itself to trust you.
